Former President Jacob Zuma’s daughter Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla will appear in the Durban Magistrates Court on Thursday, on charges relating to the deadly July 2021 unrest in KwaZulu-Natal.
In a social media post on X, the uMkhonto weSizwe Party urged its “ground forces” to support Zuma-Sambudla by attending court “in numbers”.
Chaos broke out in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng in 2021 when Zuma was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment after being found guilty for being in contempt of court. The unrest claimed more than 300 lives.
The South African Human Rights Commission launched the hearing to find the causes of the unrest and assess its impact on human rights.
Zuma-Sambudla has previously been accused of inciting violence during the unrest through social media posts and subsequent news reports said she was under police investigation for her alleged role in the unrest.
In 2021, the Democratic Alliance urged the South African Police Service to expedite the arrests of Zuma-Sambudla, Edward Zuma and Duduzane Zuma, when the party laid criminal charges against the three Zuma siblings following comments on social media and in the press allegedly encouraging and inciting violence following their father’s incarceration.
