As the GOOD Party, we send our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of the flooding in eThekwini’s Lamontville and Chatsworth areas. We praise the tireless efforts of disaster management workers who have been working around the clock to prevent further loss of life and damage to property, with hundreds already displaced by the severe flooding.

The province has been ravaged by weather for several years in a row. This exemplifies the needs for our government to take its dual responsibility of proper land use planning and combat ever growing risks of climate change seriously.

Following the devastating April 2022 floods in Kwa-Zulu Natal, many experts pointed to the fact that both formal and informal settlements had been built on areas that are highly prone to be impacted by these disasters.

Climate mitigation efforts recognize that with the changing dynamics at play, areas that were formerly safe for construction have increasingly become at risk of these types of events.

It is important to recognise that waiting until it is too late to respond to this reality will only lead to further displacements and possible further deaths. It is no longer business as usual, with our President recently echoing the dangers raised by climate experts around how we have now surpassed the 1.5-degree Celsius threshold.

As the GOOD Party, we will continue to advocate for greater action to limit global warming, such as our recent partnership with fossilfreeSA advocating for a Fossil Ad Ban.

There is no time to waste as the urgency of this global crisis requires a proactive approach to global decision-making, and South Africa’s path towards a Just Energy Transition is a crucial component.

Join us in our fight for Environmental Justice, as one of the five core pillars of our movement.

Issued by Wendy Nare, GOOD Representative for KwaZulu-Natal
