The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) has encouraged South Africans in the Middle East to take "immediate advantage" of the limited commercial flights out of the region, as "heavy attacks are regrettably expected to continue in the coming days".
The department has also discouraged South Africans from embarking on nonessential travel to the Middle East.
The US and Israel on February 28 embarked on a military campaign in Iran to "eliminate the imminent nuclear threat posed by the Iranian regime, destroy its ballistic missile arsenal, degrade its proxy terror networks and cripple its naval forces".
Iran has retaliated by launching attacks across the Middle East.
Dirco says that, as of March 4, more than 6 400 South Africans had registered their presence in the Middle East using the Travel Smart system.
