Deputy Minister of Communications launches Cyber Labs at four schools in the Port Elizabeth townships

The Deputy Minister of Communications, Ms Stella Tembisa Ndabeni- Abrahams, will launch Cyber Labs at four (4) schools in the Port Elizabeth townships, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Eastern Cape on the 21 October 2013.

The schools connectivity initiative is part of the Department’s mandate to ensure rural development through access to Information Communication Technologies (ICT). The Universal Service access Agency of South Africa (USAASA) as a delivery arm of the Department has identified the following schools in Port Elizabeth to receive cyber labs; John Masiza Primary in Walmer, Tamsanqa Secondary in KwaZakhele , Sakhisizwe Secondary in Zwide and Ndyebo  High School in Motherwell.  

The schools will each receive 40 laptops including two (2) year internet connectivity, a projector, screen, printer and furniture. The Deputy Minister will launch each cyber lab at its respectivetownship before proceeding to the Raymond Mhlaba Sport Centre for the official Imbizo programme. 

The Deputy Minister will be engaging about 3000 community members with other Provincial leaders on related issues. The Department of Communications and its State Owned Companies (SOCs) will also have an exhibition area showcasing the products and services under the theme “Digital Migration”.

The national programme championed by USAASA has rolled out 42 schools in the Eastern Cape thus far and will conclude the implementation plan by the end of the financial year.
