The Department of Employment and Labour’s Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) welcomes the unannounced search and seizure operation conducted this morning by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) at the UIF’s Head Office in connection with the COVID-19 Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme (TERS).

This decisive action highlights the SIU's unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and good governance.

The COVID-19 TERS was established to provide critical financial relief to workers and employers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Any diversion of these funds from their intended purpose is a serious breach of trust and will not be tolerated.

The UIF fully supports the SIU’s efforts to ensure that every cent of workers’ money is accounted for. Those who unduly benefited from these funds must face the full might of the law. Misuse of state resources is a criminal act, and the UIF will cooperate fully with all investigations to ensure justice is served.

Our mandate is clear: public funds must be used for their intended purpose. We remain resolute in safeguarding workers’ money and reinforcing systems that promote integrity and accountability. Anyone found guilty of misappropriating these funds will face the consequences without exception.

The UIF will continue to work closely with law enforcement agencies to follow the money trail and ensure that those responsible for wrongdoing are held accountable. This is not just about recovering funds, it is about restoring public confidence and upholding the principles of good governance.
