New Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya promises political stability

Newly elected Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya assured residents that the anxiety and political instability that has plagued the City is not lost on her, and vowed to place the politics of the past behind and bring stability to the City.

Moya, who was the Deputy Mayor of the City, was elected as Mayor on Wednesday with 122 votes, after the Democratic Alliance’s Cilliers Brink was removed from office when the African National Congress and ActionSA joined forces with the Economic Freedom Fighters to vote him out in a motion of no confidence.

Brink was again nominated for the Mayorship on Wednesday, but only received 86 votes.

Since taking office as Deputy Mayor under Brink’s mayorship, Moya said she has dedicated much of her time to engaging with councillors, officials, and residents across all seven regions of the City.

She acknowledged that many residents are facing significant challenges in accessing basic services and opportunities, and noted the gap between the rich and the poor, which she said was becoming a defining characteristic of the City.

She vowed to “work tirelessly” to bridge the gap and ensure that a just and inclusive City is created.

South Africa publishes visa reforms aimed at attracting skills

South Africa’s government published a series of reforms of the nation’s work-visa regulations that are aimed at attracting more professionals to its skills-starved economy.

Details of the remote work visitor visa and the points-based system for work visas were announced in the official Government Gazette today.

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber said that the gazetting of all required elements for the remote work visitor visa and the new points-based system for work visas amounts to the single most progressive and pro-jobs regulatory reform South Africa has seen in decades.

And, Kenya's senate to consider impeachment of deputy president

Kenya's senate will next week debate whether to dismiss Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the senate speaker said today, after the national assembly voted to impeach Gachagua.

Lawmakers voted by 281 to 44 late on Tuesday to impeach Gachagua, with one abstention. That was far more than the two-thirds majority needed to carry the motion to the senate.

Senate speaker Amason Kingi said the senate would investigate the allegations on Wednesday and Thursday next week. If at least two-thirds of the senate vote to uphold the impeachment, Gachagua will be dismissed.

Gachagua has denied all 11 charges against him, which include enriching himself and stirring ethnic hatred. He called the impeachment process a "theatre of the absurd."

His rift with President William Ruto, whom he backed in a 2022 election, spilt into the open after deadly protests this year against proposed tax increases and the cost of living.
