Parly committee welcomes Zulu King judgment
The Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs today welcomed the court judgment which upheld the recognition of the Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini as the rightful monarch of the AmaZulu nation, and it urged the royal family to resolve differences through dialogue and mutual understanding.
The Supreme Court of Appeal yesterday ruled in favour of President Cyril Ramaphosa and Misuzulu, setting aside the Pretoria High Court ruling, which last year ruled that the crowning and recognition of Misuzulu, by Ramaphosa, as the King of the Zulu nation was unlawful and invalid.
The royal family had approached the courts to determine the rightful heir, following the death of the Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu.
Cogta Committee chairperson Dr Zweli Mkhize said the ruling brings “much-needed” closure to the matter.
The committee believes the ruling now provides an opportunity for healing, unity and renewed focus on the important cultural and developmental role that traditional leadership plays in the country’s democracy.
DA lodges complaint against De Lille for alleged abuse of power
The Democratic Alliance formally lodged a complaint with Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka against Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille, for alleged abuse of power.
The DA says de Lille’s decision to dissolve the South African Tourism board was unlawful and it has requested a full investigation by the Public Protector to determine whether De Lille acted “improperly, unfairly, or unlawfully”.
The party wants De Lille to explain her actions or step aside.
Last month, De Lille dissolved the South African Tourism board, accusing it of allegedly irregularly convening a meeting in August to appoint a chairperson following the resignation of former chairperson Gregory Davids in July in the wake of placing CEO Nombulelo Guliwe under precautionary suspension.
DA Spokesperson on Tourism Haseena Ismail argued that the board had acted within its legal mandate to suspend Guliwe over concerns of serious financial irregularities and alleged abuse of power.
And, Madagascar president names army general as new prime minister
Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina named army General Ruphin Fortunat Zafisambo as prime minister, a week after dissolving the government in response to ongoing protests over power and water shortages.
Zafisambo replaced Prime Minister Christian Ntsay, who was dismissed as part of the president's move. The general was the director of the military cabinet in the prime minister's office until this appointment.
Ahead of naming him, Rajoelina said the country needed a "prime minister capable of restoring order and the people’s trust."
He added that Zafisambo's top priority would be to restore electricity and water supply.
