ANC Eastern Cape conference interdict application struck off the roll

An application to interdict the Eastern Cape ANC's elective conference, which was concluded at the weekend, was struck off the roll by the High Court, sitting in East London today.

Judge Belinda Hartley said the applicants had to pay the costs of the application.

She however ruled that the papers filed for case could be used for a possible review of the conference.

Newly elected provincial chair Oscar Mabuyane said yesterday that the judgment would largely be an academic exercise.

Plague outbreak in Madagascar claims 21 lives

An outbreak of the pneumonic and bubonic plague has claimed 21 lives in Madagascar so far, forcing the United Nations to step up its response.

The World Health Organisation reported yesterday that the Malagasy government had confirmed that a Seychelles basketball coach visiting the country had died from the disease last Wednesday.

To date there are at least 114 confirmed cases of the plague which was identified last August.

amaphosa condemns violence at ANC elective conference

Using violence and approaching the courts cannot be seen as ways to resolve disputes within the ANC, deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa said yesterday.

This came after members disrupted the Eastern Cape ANC's elective conference on Friday night, while others who attempted to storm the venue on Saturday night had to be dispersed with stun grenades at the Eastern Cape provincial elective conference in East London.

Ramaphosa said scenes from Sunday morning's plenary was something the ANC must be deeply ashamed of.
