SAA plays hardball as strike starts

South African Airways has not increased its wage hike offer to striking unions at the airline, spokesperson Tlali Tlali said today.

The airline, which is technically insolvent, is sticking to its 5.9% offer.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa and the South African Cabin Crew Association have rejected the offer and started an unprotected strike on Friday morning.

The airline will apply a “no work no pay” principle to those who participate in the strike.

The strike forced the cancellation of SAA flights on Friday and Saturday.

Brics Summit Declaration addresses fair trade concerns

With high levels of under-invoicing being a critical challenge in efforts to deepen fair trade, Trade and Industry Minister Ebrahim Patel has welcomed the Brics Summit Declaration by Heads of State.

The Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa declaration was adopted during the ninth meeting of the Brics Ministers of Trade, held in Brazil earlier this week.

These concerns were shared at the Brics meeting and had been incorporated in the declaration, which was signed by the Brics countries Presidents.

Kenya, Somalia agree to restore ties after spat over oil rights

Kenya and Somalia agreed to restore ties after a months-long spat over oil rights that led the neighbours to halt the issuance of visas on arrival for each other's citizens.

The two East African nations "agreed to normalise bilateral relations" beginning with the restoration of the visa policy.

Tensions escalated early this year when Kenya recalled its ambassador to Somalia after the Mogadishu government decided to auction the oil and gas exploration blocks at the centre of the maritime territorial dispute. Somalia denied the accusation.
