Ramaphosa calls on private sector to assist in fighting corruption
Corruption has become a big issue that has to be addressed by the whole nation, President Cyril Ramaphosa said yesterday.
Ramaphosa told business leaders at a meeting in the Pietermaritzburg City Hall, that a number of issues, especially corruption, were hampering economic development in the country.
He said the ANC-led government spent the past few months dealing with those issues that "weakened" government institutions.
Ramaphosa said that the private sector also had a responsibility to root out wrongdoing in various institutions because in "government they are determined to do so".
ANC loses seat and retains another in Mpumalanga municipal by-elections
The ruling ANC has lost one seat to an independent candidate while retaining another in municipal ward by-elections in Mpumalanga this week, the Independent Electoral Commission said.
In a vote held in Dr JS Moroka municipality on Tuesday, independent candidate Marks Ntuli was victorious with 50.11% of the votes cast.
In another by-election in Ward 1 of Thaba Chweu on Wednesday, the ANC managed to retain its seat through new incoming councillor Phindiwe Segoane, the IEC said.
SA environment minister lauds seizure of rhino horns at OR Tambo
Minister of Environmental Affairs Nomvula Mokonyane has commended the work of customs agents who recovered 36 rhino horns at OR Tambo International Airport earlier this week.
In a statement Mokonyane said the discovery and confiscation of the rhino horn estimated to be worth more than R23-million, was a feather in the cap of enforcement agencies working to rid the airport and country of wildlife-related crimes.
The South African Police Service announced that the seizure was part of an ongoing operation into ridding the airport of criminal activities following the recent confiscation of rhino horn originating from Southern Africa in the Far East.
