Investors watching closely as Ramaphosa considers cabinet line-up

President Cyril Ramaphosa said his early morning walks gave him time to think about his cabinet amid growing speculation about its composition and the future of the finance minister.

In his state of nation address on Friday, Ramaphosa strongly hinted at a cabinet shake-up when he said he would review the make-up and size of government departments.

Investors are watching closely to see if Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba, who is due to deliver the budget speech on Wednesday, keeps his job.

Ramaphosa to respond to MPs after Sona debate

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected today to respond to the debate and questions around his first State of the Nation Address.

Ramaphosa presented the State of the Nation Address last week Friday, less than 48 hours after former president Jacob Zuma resigned, and faced gruelling questions from MPs who responded to his address on Monday.

Pandor tells opposition to leave Cabinet decisions to the president

Opposition parties should leave decisions regarding assembling a new Cabinet to South Africa's new president, Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor told the National Assembly.

The minister – a dark horse tipped to be appointed deputy president in Ramaphosa's expected new Cabinet – played the "sweeper" role for her party in replying to the previous speakers.

In a very composed rebuttal, Pandor welcomed the input of opposition leaders such as African Christian Democratic Party leader Kenneth Meshoe, but said they should allow the new president to exercise his prerogative.

    Also making headlines:

Former president Jacob Zuma will join the ANC "on the ground" during 2019 election campaigns, the ANC KwaZulu-Natal's Musa Dladla region said on yesterday.
