GDP grows by 0.5% in the third quarter
South Africa’s GDP increased by 0.5% in the third quarter, following an increase of 0.9% in the second quarter, Statistics South Africa reports.
The trade, catering and accommodation industry increased by 1%, contributing 0.1 of a percentage point to GDP growth. Increased economic activities were reported for wholesale trade, retail trade, motor trade, accommodation and food and beverages.
The mining and quarrying industry increased by 2.3%, contributing 0.1 of a percentage point. The largest positive contributors were platinum group metals, manganese ore and coal.
The finance, real estate and business services industry increased by 0.3%, contributing 0.1 of a percentage point. Increased economic activities were reported for real estate activities and other business services.
The personal services industry increased by 0.3%. Increased economic activities were reported for community services and other producers.
DA lays fraud charges against Tshwane deputy mayor
The Democratic Alliance will lay fraud charges against Tshwane Deputy Mayor Eugene Modise at the Brooklyn Police Station tomorrow.
Charges will be laid by Tshwane mayoral candidate Cilliers Brink and DA Tshwane spokesperson for finance Jacqui Uys.
The charges follow an investigative report which concluded that Modise “unlawfully” benefitted from a multimillion-rand municipal security contract while he was a councillor.
The report indicated that Modise was in breach of conduct by allegedly benefiting from the business of Triotic Protection Services.
City of Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya is unpacking crime statistics in the City today.
The party said it welcomed Moya’s efforts to address crime in Tshwane, however, said she should confront criminality in her own administration.
Guinea-Bissau election commission says cannot conclude presidential election process
Guinea-Bissau's electoral commission said today it is unable to finalise the November 23 presidential election after armed men seized ballots and vote tallies from its offices.
Army officers in the West African state seized power on November 26, a day before the electoral commission was due to announce the results of the contested election.
Idrissa Djalo, a senior official of the electoral commission, said there are no material and logistic conditions to follow through with the electoral process.
