Former Transnet chief executive officer Brian Molefe and the parastatal's former finance boss, Anoj Singh, were arrested this morning in connection with a R93-million corruption and fraud case linked to the procurement of 1 064 locomotives in 2015.

Two other people were also arrested.

Five people, including former Transnet group CEO Siyabonga Gama, have already been charged in the case.

The matter stems from a payment of R93-million to Trillian Capital, a Gupta-linked proxy company, to secure funding for the purchase of the locomotives.

The transaction advisory contract was initially awarded to global investment bank JP Morgan before the deal was cancelled. It was subsequently awarded to Trillian.

The estimated cost of the project ballooned from around R38-billion in 2012 to more than R50-billion.

Cope president Mosiuoa Lekota placed on suspension

The Congress of the People’s national committee has placed party President Mosiuoa Lekota on precautionary suspension.

The announcement was made by Cope's deputy president, Willie Madisha, during today’s media briefing.

Reasons cited for Lekota's suspension include the role he played in dividing the party and the meetings he convenes to form parallel structures within Cope.

Lekota has been Cope's president since 2008.

And, Gauteng health MEC to be grilled over alleged Tembisa Hospital corruption

Gauteng Health MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi will tomorrow face questions over payments running into hundreds of millions of rand at Tembisa Hospital.

Whistleblower Babita Deokaran was assassinated last year after flagging dozens of payments as "possibly fraudulent".

Mokgethi will field questions in the Gauteng legislature.

Last week, the department’s CFO Lerato Madyo and Tembisa Hospital CEO Ashley Mthunzi were suspended.
