DA welcomes Mboweni's economic growth plan

The DA has welcomed the proposals on economic growth, which Finance Minister Tito Mboweni has put forward for public comment.

Mboweni's plan, quietly released late on Tuesday on National Treasury's website, calls for structural reforms that can "reverse the downward trend in South Africa’s growth potential and competitiveness".

DA finance spokesperson Geordin Hill-Lewis said Mboweni's proposed reforms were "pro-growth and pro-jobs" and were sure to be opposed by the left wing of the ruling ANC, but he urged the minister to stand firm.

Swearing-in of eThekwini mayor postponed

A full eThekwini council meeting in which the mayor-elect, Mxolisi Kaunda, would have been sworn in has been postponed and no reasons have been given.

Inkatha Freedom Party exco councillor Mdu Inkosi said they received an SMS, saying the meeting was cancelled, with no reasons given.

The meeting was expected to take place at City Hall on Thursday, but the SMS was sent to councillors on Wednesday.

Watson was to be served with notice to file affidavit

Late Bosasa boss Gavin Watson was to be served with a notice to give the ongoing State capture commission of inquiry his version on alleged corruption involving the company and senior politicians.

Commission chairperson deputy chief justice Raymond Zondo said he had issued a directive as per commission rules to be served on Watson, but this had yet to be done when he died on Monday.

The businessman was killed in a single-car accident outside the O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.
