Today the ANC used its slight majority - with the assistance of some one seat parties in Council to elect one of its own to the position of Speaker.

The position of Speaker acts as a bulwark against executive overreach and is a crucial legislative oversight mechanism.

The election of the ANCs Cllr. Dora Mlambo, following the resignation of EFF speaker, Nthabiseng Tshivenga, highlights the ructions taking place in the current ANC-EFF coalition.

The DA put forward a candidate, Cllr. Lucky Dinake, to stabilise the crucial legislative work of Council.

Despite our unsuccessful bid for this position, as the second largest party represented in Council, we will continue to use our strength of numbers to hold this failing administration to account.

In the upcoming 2026 Local Government Elections, residents will have the power to elect a DA majority in Council to bring stability to the City of Ekurhuleni and ensure that effective, ethical governance becomes the order of the day.

Issued by Cllr Brandon Pretorius - DA Ekurhuleni Caucus leader
