The DA welcomes a commitment from Deputy President, Paul Mashatile, to support legislation in Parliament that improves the economic wellbeing of all South Africans, no matter which Party introduces that Bill.

The DA’s Economic Inclusion for All Bill is currently the only such Bill on the table in Parliament that will improve the economic wellbeing of all South Africans as an alternative to BEE.

Last week the Deputy President committed to Parliament that BEE is currently under review, in response to a question by the Deputy Chief Whip of the DA.

Having committed to a review of BEE and promising to support legislation aimed at bettering the lives of all South Africans, the DA is encouraged that Deputy President Paul Mashatile is expressing alignment to our Economic Inclusion for All Bill.

Parliament has the potential to vote to replace BEE soon, to bring about fair and inclusive empowerment that judges real disadvantage of individuals, not political proximity or connections.

These unexpected indications from Mashatile can ensure that the ANC supports the replacement of BEE with government procurement that grows our economy, creates jobs, and frees millions of South Africans locked out of opportunity.

The Deputy President said “if it’s good, takes us forward, why not?”

Indeed: Let’s replace BEE with a meaningful, inclusive empowerment that benefits millions of people in need. If not, why not?
