In a significant development, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has successfully obtained approval from Eskom for an industrial electricity load curtailment line to support Wesselsbron Industries. This crucial achievement addresses the challenges faced by large-scale milling and industries in the Wesselsbron Industrial Area that heavily rely on Eskom bulk power.
Loadshedding disruptions often hinder the quick restart of operations for these industries, and their reliance on Eskom power makes generators insufficient. Recognising the need for additional start-up time, the DA-led task team collaborated with Eskom to submit a load curtailment application that adheres to the relevant loadshedding rules and empowers customers to manage their own demands.
During a productive meeting held on 1 March 2023, the task team engaged with Eskom to discuss technical matters and propose solutions for load curtailment. Additionally, the DA has raised the pressing issue of sporadic water shortages in Wesselsbron and Monyakeng, as loadshedding significantly impacts bulk water supply.
The joint meeting with Nala Local Municipality and Eskom on 29 May 2023 resulted in the approval of the load curtailment application and the incorporation of the DA's proposals to address water supply challenges in Wesselsbron. This positive outcome not only benefits local industries but also contributes to food security, as Wesselsbron silos are known to be the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, producing over 500,000 tons of maize annually.
The DA's commitment to municipal development extends beyond electricity solutions. Our plans include revamping the main substation to ensure reliable power supply to industries. Moreover, the implementation of a distribution line to the reservoirs, fed by the curtailment line, will stabilise the water supply for residents in Monyakeng and Wesselsbron. The DA will also prioritise budget allocations to address potholes and enhance road infrastructure, particularly in relation to the newly constructed paved intersections accommodating large trucks and passenger vehicles in Wesselsbron CBD.
The DA remains dedicated to improving road, electricity, and water infrastructure in Nala, aiming to benefit both residents and businesses in our vibrant small town.
