The IEC has appointed Sy Mamabolo as the Chief Electoral Officer.
Mr Mamabolo has performed with distinction in various roles he has played within the organization over nearly two decades. These roles include Provincial Electoral Officer for Gauteng and Deputy CEO: Election Management. In this latter role, he deserves large credit for last year’s elections, which were run successfully.
He has at all times acted professionally, diligently and effectively. Moreover, he has thus far proven to be unscrupulously impartial and resistant to bullying and badgering from various quarters. These are exactly the qualities needed in the run-up to 2019, which is likely to be highly contested. It is hoped that Mr Mamabolo will continue to turn in the kind of performance he has been able to produce thus far.
However, we note that the IEC’s performance record in complying with the ConCourt’s ruling to supply an addressed voter’s roll has been woefully inadequate. This is one area that he needs to engineer a dramatic turnaround, and quickly.
