The DA expects that continued progress in conservation and anti-poaching efforts, led by Minister Willie Aucamp, will feature in the President’s SONA tomorrow.

The DA also expects the President to acknowledge Minister Aucamp’s launch of the Kruger Recovery Fund following severe flood damage to the Kruger National Park, because the park is a flagship conservation asset of global significance and a cornerstone of South Africa’s biodiversity, tourism economy and cultural heritage. The DA supports the urgent restoration of Kruger as it approaches its 100-year milestone.

The department's improved enforcement coordination has led to a 16% drop in rhino poaching in 2025 , which is a very important step in the right direction.

Under the leadership of Minister Willie Aucamp, a joint operation with Singapore authorities in December 2025 seized 17 rhino horns (55.4kg) and 26.2kg of lion and tiger bones at Kempton Park.

Minister Aucamp’s commitment to coastal community jobs was evident with the launch of the R170 million fishmeal plant at Sandy Point Harbour.

Indeed, investment in the oceans economy supports job creation and revitalises coastal communities.

We support the Minister’s continued work to advance the Oceans Economy Master Plan, streamline environmental authorisations, and strengthen science-based fisheries management to unlock inclusive growth.

We also welcome the minister's issuance of the interim Total Allowable Catches for the 2026 fishing season to ensure timely opening of the season based on the best available science, and look forward to this featuring in the SONA.

The DA will continue to support reforms that protect South Africa’s environment while ensuring that conservation, climate action and the oceans economy contribute meaningfully to job creation, investment and long-term sustainability.
