The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal condemns in the strongest possible terms the recent statement by ANC eThekwini Mayor, Cyril Xaba who has sought to abuse council resources to politicise his failures in the city, and attack Public Works MEC, Martin Meyer.

That the mayor would seek to blame the DA and MEC Meyer for his failures is laughable but unsurprising. eThekwini is in the state it is because of Mayor Xaba and the ANC’s failures to govern the city. It is why the ANC achieved only 14% in the city in the 2024 elections.

People are tired of their excuses and lies, and Mayor Xaba’s latest untruths are just another iteration in this sad and sorry story.

MEC Meyer has sought to ensure that contractors and municipalities are paid what is due to them, but for the mayor to pretend that the MEC is the reason that billions of Rands were owed is simply cheap politicking. It is the mess left by his party which saw them lose power so dramatically in 2024 that MEC Meyer has worked hard to rectify and resolve.

All failures in the city are not the fault of the DA or Meyer, but entirely at the foot of his and the ANC’s door.

The good news is that after the upcoming local government election, that problem will be solved by the DA, just like we have been doing in KZN since 2024.

The DA calls on the mayor to drop the scoring of cheap political points and to focus on fixing the city that his party has broken.
