We note NUMSA’s call for a full and thorough investigation into the Lily Mine tragedy. The DA will also be writing to the Minister of Mineral Resources, Mosebenzi Zwane, requesting the rapid reporting of results to Parliament to ensure that steps are taken to ensure that this is not a regular occurrence.
The DA extends its sincerest sympathies to the families and colleagues of the three miners who have been trapped in the Lily Mine collapse in Mpumalanga for almost two weeks.
The DA would also like to highlight the efforts of the rescue team volunteers who worked unceasingly and bravely in the tragically unsuccessful rescue attempt.
It has been 13 days since the mine shaft collapsed. At present, rescue operations have been suspended for three weeks due to a third collapse, which occurred as the rescue team got closer to the 80m-deep container where the miners are trapped.
Our prayers and thoughts are with the miners and their families.
