I am horrified by the incident on the M1 South in Braamfontein of a mortuary vehicle that lost a wheel and was stuck on the highway with 16 adult corpses and 26 stillborn babies in an open trailer.

According to the driver, he was taking the bodies from the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital to a burial site in Eldorado Park.

The Gauteng Forensic Pathologist services have been called in to assist with taking the bodies for burial.

I am most concerned that according to JMPD, the driver did not have any documentation that he was from a registered mortuary or any hospital documentation to move the bodies.

The Gauteng Health Department needs to investigate this incident which shows disrespect for the dead being transported in an unsuitable vehicle.

I hope that dignified burials can be arranged for the bodies as soon as possible.
