The Democratic Alliance (DA) will write to the Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Urban Planning and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Lebogang Maile, to investigate an unruly ANC councillor from the Emfuleni Local Municipality, who allegedly put a stop to the construction of a new clinic project in Zone 17 in Sebokeng several times.

According to a voice clip recorded during a meeting between the contractor and the project steering committee, Ward 2 Councillor, Griffiths Mzizi, and a group of people stopped the construction of the project more than four times, demanding a 30% social contribution.

The project steering community has further accused this same ward councillor of influencing local business people to stop the project and wanting to have a say in the employment of those who are working on the clinic project.

The construction of the 24-hour multimillion rand clinic that will benefit thousands of residents in Sebokeng once completed, started in August 2018 and was scheduled to be completed in May 2019.

During an oversight inspection the DA conducted at the clinic last week, more than 250 patients waited for hours in the scorching heat to receive medical assistance from the small mobile health units provided.

The mobile health units simply do not have adequate resources to accommodate such a large number of patients at a time.

It is unacceptable that sick residents have to wait in long queues to be served in a mobile health container while a councillor who should have their interests at heart, disrupts service delivery for his own gain.

In an oral reply to questions in the Gauteng Legislature recently, Health MEC, Bandile Masuku, revealed that it takes an average of six hours, 44 minutes for a patient to receive medical attention in some Gauteng hospitals.

The community of Sebokeng needs a clinic, not a politician who gambles with their health.

Only the DA can bring change that builds one South Africa for all.
