The Democratic Alliance has written to KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Premier and Royal Household portfolio committee Chairperson, Celiwe Madlopha, (view here) calling for an urgent special meeting.

The move comes after the arrest of Office of the Premier (OTP) Director-General, Nonhlanhla Mkhize, on Monday on allegations of defeating the ends of justice and intimidation.

The DA regards Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube’s silence on this matter during the course of the last few days as unacceptable. The serious allegations involve one of the highest ranking members of her office yet she has failed to keep KZN’s people informed.

The DA will insist that the Premier fully update the committee. This must include;
• Whether the D-G will be asked to step aside under the circumstances and;
• Whether an Acting D-G will be appointed in the interim.

The portfolio committee performs a vital oversight role in terms of the OTP. It is only correct that the Premier account and give the people of KZN the answers they deserve.
