The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Friday called on Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana to immediately dismiss Government Pensions Administration Agency (GPAA) CEO Kedibone Madiehe, given the alleged ongoing misconduct at the agency.
The party announced that during the coming weeks, the DA-chaired Portfolio Committee on Public Service and Administration will summon the GPAA as well as the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) to account for recent misconduct scandals in the public pension space.
Media reports allege that a senior manager was suspended for refusing to pay R21-million for a dodgy contract.
DA spokesperson on Finance Dr Mark Burke claimed that Godongwana had been aware of the issue for months, stressed the need for him to protect pensions.
Burke said the DA had suggested to the Finance Committee that joint meetings with the Portfolio Committee on Public Service and Administration be held, but said there has been no response from chairperson Joe Maswanganyi.
Burke highlighted that earlier in August, it emerged that GPAA signed a nearly R1-billion lease agreement with a company that it appeared did not even own the building.
Burke accused the ANC of responding by leading the looting or remaining passive.
He said the DA would work towards the appointment of completely politically independent and competent civil servants to preside over the public pension space.
