The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), has written to the Chairperson of the Select Committee on Security and Justice, Ms J Mananiso, to request the urgent summoning of KZN Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to testify before Parliament.

This comes in the wake of explosive allegations made by Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi, who has exposed a plot aimed at silencing him and his investigative team as they uncover rogue elements operating within the South African Police Service (SAPS) national office. In an interview with eNCA, the commissioner revealed that the smear campaign against him originates from within the organisation, further alleging attempts to derail his efforts to combat corruption and criminal activity.

Despite these challenges, Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi has assured the public that policing efforts in KwaZulu-Natal remain unaffected, vowing to stand firm in the face of intimidation. His statement, “We will challenge them legally and deal with them, but if they want to come physically, we will meet them on the field”, shows the seriousness of the threats he potentially faces.

The DA believes that these allegations require immediate investigation by Parliament to ensure transparency and accountability within SAPS. It is imperative that the Select Committee on Security and Justice hears firsthand testimony from Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi to uncover the truth behind his claims and address any systemic issues within the police service.

As the backbone of law enforcement, SAPS must operate free from internal corruption and sabotage. The safety of our communities depends on the integrity of the men and women tasked with protecting them. Parliament has a duty to act decisively in holding those responsible to account and ensuring that no individual or faction undermines the rule of law.

The DA will continue to advocate for transparency, accountability, and justice in this matter.
