The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape extends its deepest condolences to the family, loved ones and broader Muslim community with the untimely murder of Imam Muhsin Hendricks.
Mushin Hendricks was not only a pioneering figure within the Muslim community. He was a courageous advocate for the rights and dignity of marginalized individuals, particularly those in the LGBTQIA+ community. His tireless work to create safe spaces and fight for inclusivity through The Inner Circle and the Al-Ghurbaah Foundation has left an inerasable mark on both local and global efforts for justice and equality.
As we mourn this sincere loss, it is crucial that we also address the circumstances surrounding Mushin's murder, with the seriousness it warrants. The nature of the killing strongly suggests a professional hit, which raises alarming concerns about the potential involvement of organized crime.
Thomas Walters MPP says: “The DA in Western Cape call on the South African Police Services to take a hard stance by investigating all possible angles, including the possibility of this being a hate-crime motivated by prejudice or intolerance against Imam Hendricks’ identity and activism.
“This alleged hate-crime during Pride Month is a painful reminder of the homophobic hatred many still face, and the ongoing fight for justice, equality and the protection of all human rights."
