The #DefeatDayZero campaign launched by Democratic Alliance Leader, Mmusi Maimane, in Athlone today, shows clear, decisive, and unwavering political leadership by the Leader to ensure that the people of the DA-led Western Cape Province do not run out of water.

As the only DA-run province in South Africa, it is highly commendable to see the political leaders of the Western Cape take charge of managing a crisis which affects the livelihoods of each and every resident of our province. This is an act of sheer commitment and proactive service to the people of the Western Cape, one which we rarely see from politicians in our country.

I call on all residents to reduce water consumption to less than 50 litres of water per person, per day. Our collective aim is now to reduce water usage to less than 450 million litres per day.

The #DefeatDayZero campaign is a hopeful reminder that where the DA governs, despite having been failed by the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane, whose Constitutional mandate is to build water infrastructure, we refuse to compromise on our commitments to service delivery in the face of the drought crisis.

The people of the Western Cape have placed their trust in the DA, and we, in cooperation with each and every resident, aim to #DefeatDayZero. Working together, we can drastically lower our water consumption and push back Day Zero until long term augmentation plans come to fruition.

#DefeatDayZero is a clear indication that where the DA governs, we are transparent in our governance, and committed to our people to continue to ensure stable and continuous service delivery, even in the most dire of times.
