New Covid-19 infections have continued to climb, with the country recording 2 273 new confirmed cases on Monday.

Gauteng recorded 1 909 cases in one day, according to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD).

As of Monday, the country recorded 2 963 679 laboratory-confirmed cases. There have been 25 new Covid-19-related deaths, bringing the confirmed death toll to 89 822.

"The institute reports 2 273 new Covid-19 cases that have been identified in South Africa… This increase represents a 10.7% positivity rate," the NICD said.

The majority of new cases on Monday were again reported in Gauteng with 84%, followed by the Western Cape with 5%. KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 3% of all new cases; Mpumalanga and North West 2%; and the Free State and Limpopo 1%.

The Eastern Cape and Northern Cape each accounted for less than 1% of Monday's new cases, said NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh.

Gauteng recorded 1 909 new cases on Monday, the Western Cape 119 and KwaZulu-Natal 63.

There were 79 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour reporting cycle. As of Monday, 2 328 people were in hospital for Covid-19.

South Africa conducted 19 434 381 cumulative tests to date, of which 21 302 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.

According to the Department of Health, 25 448 767 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 116 074 were administered in the last 24-hour cycle. To date, 14 241 743 adults are fully vaccinated, and 445 401 children have received one vaccine dose.
