The Portfolio Committee on Employment and Labour congratulated South Africa on being elected for a two-year term to serve as Chairperson of the African Regional Labour Administration Centre (ARLAC), in a meeting that was held in Lusaka, Zambia, recently.
The South African delegation was led in that meeting by the Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour, Ms Judith Nemadzinga-Tshabalala. ARLAC is a vital institution aimed at promoting effective labour administration and policies across the African region. Established by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), ARLAC plays a crucial role in strengthening labour governance, improving labour laws and enhancing social dialogue among member states.
Its work supports the development of fair, equitable and inclusive labour systems that contribute to the socio-economic growth of African nations.
South Africa’s election marks a significant milestone for the country as it assumes the role of Chairperson for the first time since ARLAC was established in 1974. South Africa’s leadership will be instrumental in advancing ARLAC’s mission and facilitating collaborative efforts in Africa on labour issues, such as employment creation, workers’ rights and social protection.
South Africa’s new position also demonstrates its growing influence and commitment to regional development, helping to guide Africa towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG 8) on decent work and inclusive economic growth.
The Chairperson of the committee, Mr Boyce Maneli, said: “We would like to take this opportunity as the committee to congratulate Minister Nomakhosazana Meth for this important responsibility. This task given to South Africa reinforces our task of building a better Africa and better world.”
Issued by the Parliamentary Communication Services on behalf of the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Employment and Labour, Boyce Maneli
