International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, or World Drug Day, was observed on Sunday, 26 June 2022, to raise awareness of the severity of drug abuse.

Statistics indicate that nearly 15% of South Africans may have a drug problem. Substance abuse is a major contributor to multiple socio-economic problems such as poverty, unemployment, the escalation of chronic diseases and domestic violence. One of the key areas of awareness the day seeks to highlight is that drug abuse arises from the use of both illicit and prescribed drugs.

As a city we must stand together in ensuring that drug abuse is combated. We must work hard to help reduce temptation and peer pressure, and the effect of poor role models by giving our citizens healthier ways to spend their time and to focus their energy. The Department of Social Development stands in support of our vulnerable people within the City of Johannesburg.

World Drug Day is a reminder to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world free of drug abuse and it is supported by various rehab centres around South Africa.

The City of Johannesburg supports and stands with the South African National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence, which offers treatment ranging from care to screening, assessment, medical treatment and therapeutic treatment for services users and families as well as aftercare services.

The Social Development Department encourages anyone suffering from drug abuse to seek help and commits to assisting those struggling with drug abuse throughout their journey of recovery and to assist individuals in educating themselves around the various rehabilitation therapies available.

Issued by The City of Johannesburg MMC for Health and Social Development Cllr Ashley Sauls I
