The DA in the Northern Cape welcomes that the tabling of the Northern Cape Adjustment Budget yesterday emphasises the serious need for proper financial management in the province.

We note announcements from the MEC for Finance, Economic Development & Tourism around future infrastructure funding. The problem is that bulk infrastructure for supplying water and electricity is collapsing now, making it difficult for residents to enjoy their constitutional rights and placing the economic future of the province at risk. We need urgent intervention to ensure proper maintenance and upgrades to infrastructure.

We also urge the provincial government to ensure that sector departments providing essential services to residents are properly resourced. If one looks at the Northern Cape Department of Health, for example, proper resourcing means enough money as well as enough medical practitioners and support services.

If departments do not allocate and spend their resources wisely, residents will never receive services of an acceptable quality.
