The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education has given the Limpopo Department of Education until Friday, 30 January, to outline how the department will address deteriorating school infrastructure, inadequate water supply and poor sanitation identified during an oversight visit to five schools in the Mopani Education District.
The committee said this after its visit to Yingisane Special School for the Deaf, Moime Primary, Totwana Primary School, Taile Crèche and Mmalesiba where it found dilapidated classrooms, pit latrine toilets, lack of running water and management challenges.
The Chairperson of the committee, Ms Joy Maimela said: “These conditions are unacceptable and undermine the dignity, safety and right to basic education of learners. The department must urgently account to the committee on how these challenges will be addressed.”
The committee is in the province on a week-long oversight visit. It will today, Tuesday, 27 January be in the Sekhukhune District, where it is scheduled to visit Bohlale Crèche, Nkotwane Secondary School, Tiba-Moshito Primary School, Seraki Secondary School and Bosele School for the Blind and Deaf.
Issued by the Parliamentary Communication Services on behalf of the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education, Joy Maimela
