The DA is concerned by the Air Traffic Navigation Services (ATNS) continued failure to address critical flight safety issues at George Airport, especially as winter approaches. Despite the Standing Committee on Economic Development and Tourism’s written request to the ATNS, there has been no response from their side as to when the entity’s senior management shall appear before the committee.

With the Alternative Means of Compliance (AMOC) for flight procedures having expired yesterday, on the 10th of April, and no clear timeline for updated procedures, travellers are left in the dark. Flight procedures are an essential part of guiding the safe take-off and landing of aircraft. As winter takes hold and daylight hours shorten, the challenges of travelling to and from George become even more pronounced. Although the runways at George remain operational, limitations in the Instrument Landing System (ILS) may continue to disrupt landings, posing a significant threat to tourism and local businesses.

The Democratic Alliance will not stand idly by while inaction from the ATNS undermines safety and the economy. The continued silence from both the Minister of Transport and the ATNS is unacceptable. In the absence of clear communication, Members of Parliament are left to rely on media reports rather than official briefings, hindering our ability to engage meaningfully with our constituencies.

The people of George, residents, travellers, tourism stakeholders, and businesses, deserve clarity and accountability, not radio silence from those entrusted with aviation safety.
