The Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Appropriations, Dr Mmusi Maimane, has written to the Minister of Finance requesting clarity on all costs South Africa will incur as hosts of the G20 Summit taking place in Johannesburg from 22–23 November 2025.

Dr Maimane said the G20 is an opportunity for South Africa to show the world that it is a serious global player, and to present the best of the country to the international community, given that this will be the first time the G20 summit will be held on African soil.

“The Standing Committee on Appropriations has a constitutional duty to oversee public spending and ensure that public funds are used responsibly. “To fulfil this mandate, we need a full and updated picture of how much South Africa will spend on hosting the G20.”

In 2024, the projected total cost of hosting the summit was R691 million, R194 million for the Leaders’ Summit and R497 million for Sherpa Track meetings. Dr Maimane said the committee now needs to know the current costs, including any budget changes or extra funds that may have been added since the initial estimates.

Dr Maimane said the G20 Summit must be successful but should not place unnecessary pressure on the national budget or on already struggling South Africans. “This is why the committee must be fully informed of all public funds government plans to use.”

Dr Maimane added that the G20 remains one of the most important international platforms for South Africa, bringing together the interests of both developed and developing countries to drive a shared agenda for sustainable global development.
