“Past Lessons, Future Challenges: 30 years on” is the theme of the 30th Annual Labour Law Conference (ALLC), first held in 1987 after the Wiehahn Commission of Enquiry acknowledged trade unions and the labour movement as a strategic force in the move towards a democratic South Africa.

Taking place at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park from 2-3 August 2017, the ALLC is jointly organised by the Institute for Development and Labour Law at the University of Cape Town, the Centre for Applied Legal Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of KwaZulu-Natal. It is facilitated by The Conference Company which succeeded long-time conference coordinator LexisNexis South Africa. The gathering is the largest of its kind in Southern Africa attracting some 800 professionals from around the country annually.

The South African labour sector remains volatile, with unions deeply divided and political and economic instability. Despite a modest improvement in the last quarter unemployment remains at over 25% with youth unemployment a burning issue.

Labour law specialists, trade unions, government officials, HR managers, labour practitioners, lawyers and business leaders will come together to reflect on what has been achieved over the past 30 years. They will also debate and resolve some of the current employment challenges facing the country.

Professionals will be brought up to date by prominent labour law and economic experts, who will present papers and lead discussions on changes that affect the labour market and workplace law, including crucial judgements.

Government, labour and business organisations, academic institutions, the judiciary and labour law professionals will be represented at this important event.

Early bird registration closes on 2 March 2017 and individual registrations open the same date. South African Society for Labour Law (SASLAW) member registration closes on 30 April 2017.
