The DA urges the eThekwini municipality to attend to unwarranted postponements of various committee meetings as soon as possible.

There has been a disruptive pattern of meetings not being convened as a result of officials such as the city manager not availing himself on crucial subjects that require his direct attention. In some cases, meetings are cancelled because committee members are not provided with important documents on time, causing meetings to be rescheduled to provide members ample time to review the critical information contained in the documents.

Some of these essential committees deal with infrastructure issues, the municipality's budget, parks and recreation, reporting, and the general operating capabilities of the many departments within the eThekwini Municipality, such as power, water, Durban solid waste, and roads.

eThekwini residents are burdened with uncut verges, sewage pouring into rivers and beaches, street light issues, increasing broken pipes, non-collection of garbage, increased power outages, delays in repair time, and vandalism and theft of key infrastructure.

The nonchalant behavior of municipal leadership, led by Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda, is now being displayed by officials who are fully aware that the ANC-led municipality will not hold them accountable.

This behaviour will not be tolerated or accepted as the norm. The DA will be writing to the chairs of the Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee as well as the Economic Development and Planning Committee to urgently attend to our concerns.
