The African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal has noted a shocking video clip recorded during the funeral of IFP Councillor Siyanda Magubane who was killed last week in in Umsinga.

We convey our deepest condolences to the Magubane family, relatives and his close comrades. Our hearts are also with families of other victims whose lives were cut shot as a result of political related killings.

To this end, we call upon communities and everyone else with any other information related to the murder of Cllr Siyanda Magubane to come forward with the leads that will assist the investigation processes. Importantly, police must ensure the safety of the Magubane family and other witnesses.

Political related killings and this video in particular remains a sore point as it flies in the face of attempts to ensure social stability and peace in KwaZulu-Natal.

As the ANC, we commit to work with the IFP and all other political parties to ensure that we have a matured electorate that will freely exercise their freedom of association as enshrined in the Constitution.

We call upon political parties to educate their constituencies on political tolerance and democracy.  We remain convinced that this is possible.

Critically, we urge political parties to report criminals within their parties so that they do not hide behind political parties.

As we stated last week, ANC Deputy Secretary in his capacity has the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Sipho Hlomuka has been tasked to intensify the work of the Provincial Multi-Party Political Oversight Committee on Interventions.

The committee is responsible for alerting members of parties of the importance of peaceful negotiations where arguments or disagreements surface, particularly those of a political nature.

We affirm our commitment as the ANC to ensure that this committee visits various parts of the province, including Umsinga Local Municipality, to promote intra-political party peace in order to deal with intra-political party violence.

We reiterate our call for political party leadership to play a critical role in driving intra-political party conflict resolution mechanism and dialogue in the interest of peace and stability for our province.

Lastly, as the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal we further call on anyone with a concrete evidence on the death of late Councillor Magubane to report or provide such evidence to the South African Police Station.

This includes the person seen in the video claiming he witnessed the Mayor of Umsinga Local Municipality Councillor Mletheni Ndlovu pulling the trigger and therefore one of the alleged perpetrators. Such information will assist to protect not only the dignity and rights  of Mayor Ndlovu but will speed up an investigation so that the family has closure on the matter.
