eThekwini residents are facing a growing crisis in basic service delivery from the coalition of chaos under the ANC-IFP-EFF led eThekwini municipality.

The most acute crisis is now under the leadership of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) after they took control of the Trading Services Committee in 2024.

Trading Services Committee that is responsible for basic services including water, electricity and Durban Solid Waste.

Despite promises of improved governance, the people of eThekwini are witnessing a rapid deterioration in the delivery of essential services, particularly water and electricity.

Under the leadership of Councillor Mdu Nkosi, the situation has become untenable. Reports reveal that over 58% of the city's water is unaccounted for, and with no effective intervention from the IFP, this problem is escalating. The mismanagement of water resources has exacerbated water shortages, leaving many communities without access to clean water. Furthermore, there are alarming reports that there is now no funding available to fill diesel for water tankers, leaving vulnerable communities without relief during disruptions.

The lack of communication and transparency from the Chairperson for the trading services committee, Councillor Mdu Nkosi on these critical issues is deeply concerning. As the executive in charge of water, electricity, and other essential services, Councillor Nkosi has not only failed to deliver solutions but also neglected to engage with residents about the steps being taken to address these growing problems. Nkosi must understand that being driven around in luxurious vehicles comes with a responsibility.

It is unacceptable that the people of eThekwini are being let down by these leaders. The IFP has demonstrated an inability to address even the most basic service delivery needs. Residents deserve leaders who prioritise their well-being and provide the services that are their basic rights. The IFP’s inaction is a direct disservice to the people who rely on these essential services for their daily lives.

The residents of eThekwini demand accountability. They demand action. The time has come for those in power to stop making excuses and start taking responsibility for the state of the city’s infrastructure. The people of eThekwini are fed up with empty promises and ineffective leadership.

We call on the ANC, IFP and EFF coalition to either act decisively to fix the broken systems they are responsible for or step aside and allow capable leaders to address the needs of the people. The days of recycling failed leadership must end.

In 2026, the people of eThekwini will have the opportunity to make a change. The solution is clear: vote for a government that will prioritise the delivery of basic services.

The DA is committed to improving governance, ensuring water and electricity supply, and restoring accountability to the municipality. It is time to restore the rights and dignity of eThekwini residents.
