ActionSA welcomes the City of Tshwane’s formal submission to have companies linked to Edwin Sodi, which were involved in the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Plant, blacklisted. Should this submission be approved by National Treasury, it would mean that Edwin Sodi’s feeding troughs are finally cut off and that he is barred from doing business with the state.

The City’s move to restrict Sodi from doing business with Tshwane must be celebrated, following the long road that ActionSA has travelled to achieve this outcome. Under previous governments, led by the DA, ActionSA brought motions to compel forensic investigations, which ultimately led to the matter being investigated by the SIU and to the initiation of the blacklisting process. 

These motions, and our efforts within that coalition, were opposed by the DA at every turn, as they preferred to allow this matter to pass without consequences. It is ironic that the DA now seeks to engage in political point-scoring on this issue, given that the original tender was awarded under their administration and that they failed to address the blacklisting in the five subsequent years they were in office.

The people of Hammanskraal deserve justice for the suffering and costs they endured as a result of the maladministration and corruption of Sodi’s companies. Under Mayor Nasiphi Moya’s administration, water is finally being rolled out to the people who were made collateral damage in the shady dealings of the politically connected. Historical debt for sub-standard water has also been written off. ActionSA believes that this blacklisting will finally be approved, ensuring that the wolves are kept out for good.

Upon entering office, Mayor Nasiphi Moya vowed to sweep corrupt actors out of the City once and for all. She has kept her promise by ensuring that over R11 billion in unauthorised, fruitless, wasteful and irregular expenditure is investigated, and by removing civil servants who were not fit for duty from their positions.

The efforts to finalise this blacklisting began in Mayor Moya’s first week in office, and ActionSA celebrates her decisive leadership, along with the support of the multi-party coalition government, in implementing these important corrections to the failed legacy of her predecessors.
