Many videos and photos have surfaced on social media showing water leaks and hundreds of water flowing in the streets of Maluti A Phofung.

The Fika Patso Water Treatment Works was recently reopened and as anticipated leaks have been occurring all over the Maluti A Phofung area. It is natural for leaks to occur in pipes that have not had water flowing in a long time. The pressure that the water exerts when released could cause some of the pipes to burst especially when there is ageing infrastructure.

The Maluti A Phofung reservoirs that have been stagnant for a long time and have a build-up of sludge. The method used to clean sludge is to flush the entire system and then let the unclean water run out. The videos on social media show water being wasted but in fact it is the reservoir system being flushed.

The community should rest assured that the leaks are being attended to by the Maluti A Phofung Water. Leaks should be reported immediately to: 058 718 1100. To date the Department of Water and Sanitation through Sedibeng Water have distributed and installed 301 water tanks out of the 671 delivered. A number of 77 water trucks have also been allocated to Maluti A Phofung in the fight against Covid-19. All communities are still encouraged to wash their hands at regular intervals utilizing soap and water and heed the call to stay at home.
