The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape expresses deep concern over the staggering water losses caused by infrastructure failure, reservoir overflows, and leakages from distribution systems, resulting in a national annual wastage of 1,3 billion kilolitres. This equates to a distressing daily loss of 3,6 million kilolitres.

The dire situation demands immediate attention; therefore, the Western Cape Standing Committee on Local Government will be inviting the National Department of Water and Sanitation for a briefing on the status of water losses in the Western Cape.

These national figures from 2021 likely underestimate the current extent of water loss, considering the severe battering endured by water infrastructure due to persistent high levels of load shedding over the past few years.

Water infrastructure has been neglected for years, and it now requires, an estimated investment of almost R90 billion over the next 10 years to upgrade water infrastructure nationwide.

Shockingly, approximately 20% of all water losses can be attributed to illegal connections, meter inaccuracies, and data transfer errors. The cost associated with unauthorised connections alone amounts to a staggering R250 million annually. These losses underscore the urgent need for comprehensive measures to combat illegal connections and improve accuracy in metering and data management.

Isaac Sileku MPP said: “While the Department of Water and Sanitation is responsible for distribution systems, which includes pipes and taps, the Western Cape government is currently working on a plan to improve water infrastructure in the province. The plan includes a number of initiatives, such as: Investing in new dams and pipelines, upgrading existing infrastructure, promoting water conservation, raising awareness of the importance of water resources.”
