The DA in the Western Cape congratulates the Provincial Department of the Premier on achieving a clean audit as well as over 95% of its performance targets for the 2024/25 financial year. This achievement is the embodiment of leadership by example and sets the tone for the impressive performance of all Western Cape Government departments last year. The Department’s approach to transversal governance challenges the status quo seen in other provinces, by coordinating services so that they reach people where they are.

The Department tabled its Annual Report for 2024/25 in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament today.

Some of the key achievements of the Department include its highly successful e-innovation programme, which operates over 1 600 free public Wi-Fi hotspots and 82 eCentres across the province, where residents can access computers and the internet free of charge. The Department provided 2 947 digital skills training opportunities to the public, ensuring that residents are digitally literate and increasing their employability. The Department further runs 15 digital channels through which residents can engage government, making it easier than ever for them to raise issues affecting them and access services. Millions of residents are being connected to the rest of the world every day due to the efforts of this department, and we encourage all of the people of the Western Cape to make full use of these opportunities.

The Department also plays a crucial role in supporting other Western Cape Government departments in risk management, reporting, and internal auditing. The Department achieved all its goals in this area, and the result is a well-run provincial government that has achieved unqualified audits across all departments and entities — something that is unique in the South African political context.

No other province comes close to the transparency, honesty and accountability seen in the Western Cape. The residents of the Western Cape are reaping the rewards of leadership from the Department of the Premier that centres them in all their planning and service delivery.

This approach from the Premier’s Department has also resulted in the Western Cape Government being recognised as a Top Employer by the independent Top Employers Institute. The DA-led Western Cape Government shows every day that it is at its core motivated by care for both its employees and the people of the Western Cape.

Thomas Walters, MPP: “While much of the work of the Department of the Premier goes unseen, it provides the foundation and guidance that allow the province as a whole to flourish. The Western Cape Government is not only the leading provincial government in South Africa but also a world leader in innovation during extremely trying fiscal times. I call on all provincial governments in South Africa to take note of what is going right in the Western Cape so that they too can provide clean, efficient, and effective governance to their residents.”
