In June this year, the Democratic Alliance (DA) ward councillors in Ward 31 and Ward 32, Yolande Coetzee and Monique Maartens, launched a community-based initiative to address the enormous number of potholes in Mokopane.

These potholes have not only become an eyesore but have endangered the lives of residents. In addition to this, the potholes plaguing the community have caused damage to vehicles. (See photos here, here, here and here)

The beleaguered Mogalakwena Municipality faces serious financial constraints which severely hampers service delivery and our town’s roads are dilapidating at a fast pace.

This DA-led initiative is a unique collaboration between the community, where the community members sponsor the asphalt and identifies the areas which they wish to have repaired.

The materials are then purchased and delivered to the Municipality, whereafter municipal technicians do the necessary repairs in accordance to the prescribed standards.

Our councillors work closely with the teams to ensure that the asphalt is utilised in the streets identified by the community.

The Mogalakwena Municipal Roads Division has been supplied with 222 bags of asphalt, due to the generosity of the community and have fixed 70 potholes to date.

An additional 79 bags of asphalt will be delivered this week to continue to fill major potholes throughout town.

The DA would like to thank every single resident and our businesses who have contributed to this wonderful project thus far.

In September we will be doing fundraising events to grow this project even further. Together we can achieve so much more.

This is another example of how the DA gets things done, under the most trying circumstances.

Issued by Councillor Yolande Coetzee - DA Caucus Leader at Mokgalakwena Local Municipality
