The Democratic Alliance (DA) condemns in the strongest possible terms the decision by the ANC-controlled City of Ekurhuleni to expropriate private land without paying a cent in compensation. According to news reports, the land was seized from its owner in 2019 under then mayor Mzwandile Masina, with the metro arrogantly declaring “zero” as just and equitable.

While we understand that there are outstanding municipal rates that the owners must settle, this in no way justifies the City’s unlawful and unconstitutional attempt to seize private property without compensation. Legal obligations on rates must be enforced through proper processes, not by setting a precedent that threatens every property owner in South Africa.

We further condemn the opportunistic role of ANC NEC member and former Ekurhuleni mayor, Mzwandile Masina, who has openly championed this dangerous agenda. This is a direct threat to the very foundations of our democracy, our economy, and livelihoods.

The DA stands firmly against this unconstitutional land grab. We will continue to oppose the Expropriation without Compensation and make sure that our country does not descend into chaos and economic collapse because of the ANC’s reckless populism.

The DA will fight relentlessly to defend the rule of law and protect private ownership.
